Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana – Updated List of Authorised Banks to Open an Account, Specimen Application Form & Passbook

RBI on March 11 issued a Circular to the authorised commercial banks to start observing the rules and regulations of Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana as per the Government of India Notification dated December 2, 2014. This circular has been marked to the Chairman & Managing Directors (CMDs) and Managing Directors (MDs) of some of the commercial banks operating in India.
These banks include most of the public sector banks, including State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Baroda (BoB) and Punjab National Bank (PNB) and a few private sector banks also, including Axis Bank and ICICI Bank.
RBI has instructed these banks to approach Central Account Section, Reserve Bank of India, Nagpur for necessary arrangements to report Sukanya Samriddhi Account transactions with immediate effect. I think it means the RBI wants these banks to start opening accounts under this scheme without any further delays and the subscribers will not have to wait more to open their accounts. They can now approach these authorised banks to open an account.
Though it is still not clear if only these banks would act as the agency banks to open accounts under this scheme or some other banks would also join in, but it seems the following 28 banks would definitely be among all those banks authorised to open Sukanya Samriddhi Accounts (SSA).

The list has increased up to 28 banks. But there is no news from when banks will start opening SSY account.
I hope banks will start opening these accounts this week onwards.

Yes Piyush, you can do that. Like PPF, many of these authorised banks would allow you to transfer money online to an SSY account.

It is very disappointing that these banks/post offices are taking it so long for providing services for this scheme. Even after the RBI notification, they are not acting to open these accounts. I think you should wait for a few days more for them to start opening these accounts. Nothing can be done about it.

It is still not clear what would you require to submit to withdraw money after maturity period of 21 years, but I think a declaration from the girl child would be enough for her to withdraw the amount. If not that, I think probably a copy of wedding invitation card or marriage certificate would be required.
Please note that i am putting 1.5lacs in my PPF. My query is, can i continue my PPF and can invest in SSY scheme both? The investment is not for purpose of 80C benefit but it is mainly to reduce taxable interest income.

As post office small saving schemes don’t allow NRIs/OCIs/PIOs to invest, I think it is highly unlikely that your daughter would be eligible. But, it is still not 100% clear. I would suggest you to wait for some more time to get further clarity in this matter.

Post offices don’t offer online transfer facility. You would be able to migrate your account to a bank in a few days time. SBI will offer online transfer facility, but I think SBI hasn’t started opening these accounts as yet.

Every girl child, who is born on or after December 2, 2003, is eligible for this scheme. Your younger daughter might be eligible for it.
I am having 3 months daughter I am interested in this Scheme. But I still not clear about how many years I have to pay installments. Some PO saying complete 21 years of age, some saying 14 years & then we have to keep total amount in FD to double till 21 yrs of daughter, then we can get that much amount.

You need to deposit money for 14 years from today and the scheme will mature in 21 years from the date of opening of account or whenever your daughter gets married, whichever is earlier.

You should wait for a few days more for your post office to start opening these accounts. Many post offices have started opening these accounts, while some are still not acting. This scheme is here for an indefinite time, so please be patient.

South Delhi ke post offices mein ye scheme shuru ho gayi hai. Aap Lodhi Road post office mein ye khol sakte ho. Is scheme mein aapko 14 saal tak kam se kam Rs. 1,000 deposit karne hain. 21 saal baad aapko paise milenge interest ke saath. But, Rs. 6 lakh ki figure galat hai aur agar koi bhi aapko 21 saal baad Rs. 6 lakh dene ki baat kehta hai, wo aapko misguide kar raha hai.

I think all of the post offices, but only authorised banks, are opening these accounts. Moreover, most of the banks have still not started opening these accounts.

I agree that the government should take some proactive steps for the banks to quickly start opening these accounts.
I just spoke to Indian Overseas Bank in Kerala, they are still not aware of such scheme, however they said will wait for circular to come. When would these procedures get completed at various bank branches? 2months ON since the scheme announced and banks still clueless.

1. Yes, you can open this account in your daughter’s name.
2. You can increase your contribution in the subsequent years.
3. It is not possible to calculate a precise maturity amount as your contribution will vary every year along with the rate of interest.

Yes Pradeep, it is allowed to change the deposit amount every financial year. Minimum deposit amount is Rs. 1,000.

It is not required to fund this account on a monthly basis. You need to deposit money in this account only once a year. However, you can deposit money more than once also and there is no such limit on the money to be deposited. You can increase or decrease the amount to be deposited.

I have one daughter 2 year old was born in Saudi arabia & having Consulate General, Jeddah Birth certificate where she doesn’t carry citizenship. (In Gulf countries cant get citizenship even you born there). She might been held Indian citizenship, not NRI/NRE status, but recently SBI bank was refused to open PPF account for her because she was born abroad.
I am working in Saudi Arabia, now I want to open SSY account for her, can it possible. Also tomorrow If I moved back to India & settled there permanently, It still she not omit from NRE & avail the facility to open any government scheme account in India.

1. You can deposit any amount, subject to a minimum of Rs. 1,000 and a maximum of Rs. 1,50,000.
2. You’ll get exemption u/s. 80C.

I have emailed to many banks but every one answered that no circular has been issued from RBI about this Sukanya pf. They suggested me to open ppf account for my 4 yr old daughter. If I deposit 33000/- per annum then what will be more beneficial and tax free for my daughter. RD , sukanya or ppf. Please reply soon as I want to invest at the earliest.

I went to SBI Imphal Secretariat Branch (Branch code 004562) to open Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana. The SBI bank is not accepting my Sukanya Samriddhi Form saying that instead of coming to bank I much go to Post Office. If anything you can do from your end kindly do a needful. Thanks.

1) Child’s DOB certificate
2) Parent’s PAN and Adhar Card
Most of the people are complaining the PO services. Request to all to dont blame. I have opened this account very easily and all the PO staffs were very friendly and answering very well.

But they are saying this ‘ll not work.. I need to get birth certificate with name.. whatever post officer is saying is right?

I am not sure about it coz I think most of the birth certificates don’t carry babies’ names on them. I think birth certificate along with the passport copy should work. You should try it at some other post office.

No Sushmita, your daughter is already eligible for this scheme as 10 years of age is the maximum entry age and not minimum entry age. You need to deposit money for 14 years and your daughter can withdraw it on her marriage.

Post offices do not provide any kind of online facility. But, the same is available with banks. So, you need to open this account with a bank for online verification.

ICICI Bank is also not entertaining clients for Sukanya Simridhi Yojana and it seems that they don’t have proper information and also not interested to deal in this. They simply say we don’t have much details regarding this.

The bank was saying that I can deposit the amount only once during the year. I think that is not true and the rules will be same as that of PPF.

You need to get in touch with the municipal authorities to check whether they would issue you the birth certificate for your daughter or not. As per the terms of this scheme, birth certificate is mandatory. But, you can check for alternatives in your case.

I approached Sbi for ssy they provided me form but informed me that this account can not be opened jointly by parents. Only one can open. My query is if father has opened the account whether mother can deposit the money in the same account and can take tax benefits if yes what would be the procedure.
Only the depositor can claim exemption u/s 80C. So, if the bank is refusing to open the account with joint depositors, then only the single depositor would be able to claim the exemption.

Just get the statement issued by the bank & check whether it is getting credited or not. There is no reason to panic though as they must be doing it in the right manner.

Hi, I have done all the formalities for opening the account with Axis Bank, JM Road branch mid of May and after much escalation, the Nodal officer of the Bank has given me a number saying that its my daughter’s account.
But no official welcome letter, no mechanism to monitor the funds, no customer id etc. no mechanism to transfer funds, basically no facility to know where is the money and what is happening to the account.
More so, bank is not able to access the account and the amount I had originally deposited with the Bank is also not visible anywhere.
I wish to transfer the funds to SBI, what is the procedure? As there is no cheque book etc. Also, does SBI offer online facility on the same account? Will I be able to set SI with the account?

It is not pleasant to read your case. I do not expect such a careless handling of account by Axis Bank. But, you should wait some more time to get things settled. You should keep proof of deposit with you, ask for your account statement duly stamped and approach the bank after a month or so to inquire the updated status. I hope the bank will provide you with the passbook soon. In case you still want to transfer it to SBI, then you need to approach Axis Bank & SBI to initiate the transfer process.

1. I don’t think there is any restriction for the mother to be a guardian in this account.
2. 80C limit is Rs. 1.5 lakh, so you cannot claim more than Rs. 1.5 lakh for tax deduction with this scheme.

Banks like PNB are slow in providing passbook for this scheme. You should talk to the branch manager and make a request to provide the passbook as soon as possible.

My name is prerna .I want to ask about the SSY .I have one cousin under age 10.I am quit interested for this scheme. Please make it clear about this SSY.So that I can open my account thought SSY as soon as possible.

Hi All,
What are the documents required to open SSY account. BOI is asking me to submit the below documents.
1) Child’s DOB certificate
2) Parent’s PAN and Adhar Card
3) also they are asking me for Girl PAN card.
Do I need to submit the Child PAN Card.
Every time they are asking me to submit a new documents. Not happy with the BOI staffs… Can someone please suggest me which bank will be good to Open SSY account for my child?
